The Intrusive Password Generator
Whenever you click into a password field to create a new account on a website, Google Chrome often jumps in with a pop-up, offering to automatically generate a strong, random password for you. If you accept, Chrome will save this password to your Google account. While this is a highly secure practice, it can be incredibly frustrating if you use a dedicated third-party password manager (like 1Password or Bitwarden). The Chrome pop-up constantly overlaps your actual password manager’s suggestions, leading to misclicks, confusion, and occasionally saving passwords to the wrong vault.
How to Disable the Built-In Password Suggestions
You can turn off Chrome’s password suggestion feature by disabling its ability to offer to save passwords entirely, which forces the browser to step back and let your third-party manager handle the workflow.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the browser.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand menu, click on Autofill and passwords.
5. Click on Google Password Manager. This will open a new tab.
6. On the left side of the Password Manager screen, click on Settings.
7. Locate the toggle switch labelled Offer to save passwords.
8. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
The Impact on Your Workflow
By turning this setting off, you are instructing Chrome’s built-in manager to go dormant. It will no longer offer to generate new passwords when you sign up for accounts, nor will it ask to save new credentials when you log in. Your password fields will remain clean, allowing your preferred third-party password manager extension to display its own interface without any frustrating overlap.
