When you are marking up a technical diagram on a macOS workstation, relying on standard circles and squares is often geometrically insufficient. If you need to highlight a specific zone using a complex hexagonal or octagonal boundary, drawing it manually is mathematically inaccurate. To force the macOS neural engine to inject a perfectly symmetrical, dynamically adjustable polygon directly into the file’s XML architecture, you must use the hidden tools within the Preview application.
Summoning the Polygon Engine
The Polygon tool is a dynamic, multi-sided vector shape buried deep inside Preview’s advanced markup architecture. It is mathematically calculated in real-time by the operating system.
- Double-click your image or PDF to open it in Preview.
- Look at the absolute top-right of the window and click the Show Markup Toolbar icon (it visually resembles a small marker pen).
- A secondary toolbar will instantly snap down. Locate the Shapes icon (it visually resembles a square overlapping a circle) and click it to deploy the drop-down matrix.
Executing the Vector Injection
- Look at the drop-down matrix and locate the Polygon icon (it defaults to a standard hexagon shape). Click it.
The exact millisecond you click the icon, the macOS engine will violently inject a solid vector hexagon directly into the absolute center of your document.
Manipulating the Geometric Sides
This is a highly dynamic object. You can mathematically alter its entire geometric structure on the fly.
- Resizing: Click and drag the blue dots on the perimeter of the polygon to stretch the internal dimensions. Because it is a vector, it will scale infinitely without pixelating.
- The Green Node (Number of Sides): Look closely at the perimeter of the polygon. You will see a single Green Dot. Click and carefully drag this dot in a circular motion around the perimeter. As you drag it, the macOS engine instantly recalculates the polygon’s geometry, adding or subtracting physical sides in real-time. You can seamlessly transform the shape from a 3-sided triangle up to a massive 12-sided dodecagon.
- Color Injection: With the polygon actively selected, click the Fill Color icon to change the interior color, or the Border Color icon to change the stroke color.
