A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique, 12-character alphanumeric identifier assigned to every network interface on your device. While you rarely need to know this address for everyday streaming, it becomes essential if you are trying to connect your Apple TV to a restricted network—such as a university dorm room, a hotel Wi-Fi system, or a heavily secured corporate network—that requires MAC address filtering to grant internet access.
Finding the MAC address on an Apple TV is a straightforward process, but it is important to note that if you are using an Apple TV 4K with an Ethernet port, the device actually has two distinct MAC addresses: one for the wireless connection (Wi-Fi) and one for the wired connection (Ethernet). You must provide the correct one based on how you intend to connect.
How to Find the MAC Address in Apple TV Settings
The easiest way to locate your MAC address is by navigating through the standard tvOS settings menu using your Siri Remote.
- Turn on your Apple TV and navigate to the Home Screen.
- Select and open the Settings app (the icon that looks like a silver gear).
- Scroll down and select the Network menu.
Within the Network menu, look at the information displayed on the right side of the screen. Depending on your current connection status, you will see either a Wi-Fi Address or an Ethernet Address listed near the top of the connection details. This 12-character string (formatted as XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX) is your MAC address.
How to Find the MAC Address via the About Screen
If the Network screen is not displaying the information clearly because the device is currently completely disconnected, you can also find the MAC addresses in the general system information pane.
- Open the Settings app on your Apple TV.
- Navigate to General, and then select About.
- Scroll down the list of system specifications.
In this menu, you will clearly see lines labeled Wi-Fi Address and, if applicable to your specific Apple TV model, Ethernet Address. Again, these are your permanent MAC addresses. Ensure you copy the characters exactly as they appear, as they are essential for network administrators to whitelist your device successfully.
Finding the MAC Address Without Turning on the Apple TV
If you cannot connect your Apple TV to a television screen to view the settings menu—for example, if you are attempting to register the device with a university IT department before moving into your room—you can often find the Wi-Fi MAC address printed directly on the device’s original packaging.
Look for the barcode sticker on the bottom of the Apple TV retail box. Alongside the serial number and part number, you should see a sequence labeled Wi-Fi ID or Wi-Fi MAC. This is the hardware address you need to bypass the network restrictions.
