How to Open the Command Prompt in Windows 11

Before Windows had a graphical interface with a mouse and colorful icons, users had to control their computers entirely by typing text commands into a black screen. This text-based interface still exists today, hidden beneath the surface of Windows 11.

The Command Prompt (often referred to as cmd.exe) is an incredibly powerful tool. It allows you to run advanced network diagnostics, automate repetitive tasks, and fix deeply broken system files. Here are the three best ways to open the Command Prompt in Windows 11.

Method 1: Use the Windows Search Bar (The Fastest Way)

If you just need to quickly run a standard command like ping or ipconfig, the search bar is the most efficient way to launch the tool.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar (or press the Windows key on your keyboard).
  2. Type the letters cmd into the search bar.
  3. The best match will immediately show “Command Prompt.”
  4. Click on the app icon to open it.

A black window will appear with a blinking cursor next to your user folder path (e.g., C:\Users\YourName>). You are now ready to type.

Method 2: Open as an Administrator

Many advanced commands (like sfc /scannow used for repairing corrupted Windows files) require elevated privileges. If you try to run these commands in a normal Command Prompt, the system will block you and say “Access Denied.” You must open the tool as an Administrator.

  1. Click the Start button and type cmd.
  2. Instead of clicking the app icon, look at the right-hand panel of the search menu.
  3. Click the option that says Run as administrator.
  4. A yellow warning box (User Account Control) will pop up asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device. Click Yes.

When the black window opens, look at the very top title bar. It should explicitly say “Administrator: Command Prompt.” You now have total control over the operating system.

Method 3: Use the Run Dialog Box

If your computer is glitching and the Windows Start menu refuses to open when you click it, you can bypass the visual interface entirely using a keyboard shortcut.

  1. Press and hold the Windows Key and the letter R simultaneously.
  2. A small “Run” dialog box will pop up in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
  3. Type cmd into the text field.
  4. Click OK (or press Enter).

Pro Tip: If you want to open it as an Administrator from the Run box, type cmd, but instead of pressing Enter, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
