Standard physical keyboards are inherently limited. They provide easy access to the alphabet, numbers, and common punctuation, but what happens when you need to type a copyright symbol (©), a mathematical infinity sign (∞), a Euro currency symbol (€), or an emoji?
Many users resort to searching for the symbol on Google, copying it from a website, and pasting it into their document. This is incredibly inefficient and often breaks the document’s formatting. macOS solves this problem universally across all applications with a powerful, built-in tool called the Character Viewer.
How to Open the Character Viewer
Because the Character Viewer is built deep into the operating system, it works in almost any application where you can type text—whether you are writing an email in Apple Mail, drafting a report in Microsoft Word, or sending a message in Slack.
To summon the tool, ensure your blinking text cursor is active in a text field, then press this keyboard shortcut:
Control + Command + Spacebar
A small, floating window will instantly appear near your cursor. By default, this compact view displays a grid of emojis and your most frequently used symbols.
Accessing the Advanced Technical Symbols
The compact view is great for a quick thumbs-up emoji, but it hides the true power of the application. To access technical symbols, you need to expand the window.
- Look at the top right corner of the small Character Viewer window.
- Click the tiny icon that looks like a window with a Command symbol (⌘) inside it.
The window will expand into a massive three-column directory of typography. The left sidebar categorizes every character supported by your Mac.
- Math Symbols: For fractions, integrals, and advanced operators.
- Currency Symbols: For international financial symbols like the Yen or Pound.
- Pictographs & Bullets: For arrows, stars, checks, and formatting elements.
- Latin: For accented letters required in foreign languages.
How to Search and Insert a Symbol
If you do not want to browse through the categories manually, you can use the search bar located at the top right of the expanded window.
- Type the descriptive name of the symbol you need (e.g., “copyright”, “infinity”, “trademark”, or “degree”).
- The center panel will instantly populate with all matching characters.
- Double-click the specific symbol you want.
The symbol will instantly be inserted into your document wherever your text cursor was resting. Because the symbol is inserted natively by the operating system, it will automatically adopt the font size, color, and style of the surrounding text, avoiding the messy formatting issues caused by copying and pasting from web browsers.
Customizing Your Categories
If you work in a highly specialized field, the default categories might not be enough. You can customize the Character Viewer to show incredibly obscure technical symbols.
- Click the small gear icon in the top left corner of the expanded Character Viewer window.
- Select Customize List… from the drop-down menu.
- A new window will appear showing dozens of hidden categories.
Here, you can check boxes to reveal categories for Musical Symbols, Braille Patterns, Phonetic Alphabets, and ancient historical scripts. Once checked, these highly specialized toolkits will be permanently available in your left sidebar, ready to be inserted with a double-click.
