When students or engineers need to visualize complex 2D and 3D mathematical equations, they typically assume they must purchase expensive, professional software like Mathematica or rely on clunky, ad-filled web-based graphing calculators. Surprisingly, Apple has included a powerful, professional-grade mathematics application built directly into the macOS operating system for nearly two decades, but they hide it so deeply that most users never know it exists.
The app is simply called “Grapher”, and it is capable of plotting everything from basic algebra and trigonometry to complex 3D parametric equations, vector fields, and differential equations. It can even export the resulting graphs as high-quality vector graphics or 3D animations.
Where to Find the Grapher App
Grapher is not located in the standard Applications folder, nor does it appear in the Launchpad by default. It is hidden in the Utilities folder.
- Click on your desktop to ensure Finder is active.
- In the top menu bar, click Go, then select Utilities.
- Scroll through the list of system tools until you find the application named Grapher (its icon looks like a 3D parabolic graph on a dark background).
- Double-click it to launch the app.
Alternatively, the fastest way to open it is to press Command + Space to bring up Spotlight Search, type “Grapher”, and hit Return.
Choosing Your Graph Environment
When you launch Grapher, you are immediately greeted by a prompt asking you to choose a template. The software operates in two distinct modes:
- 2D Graphs: Used for standard Cartesian coordinates (X and Y axes), polar coordinates, or logarithmic scales.
- 3D Graphs: Used to visualize shapes in a fully rotatable 3D space, supporting spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems.
For a basic mathematical function, select Default under the “2D Graph” section and click Choose.
How to Plot an Equation
The interface is remarkably clean. The main window displays a blank coordinate grid, and at the top, you will see a text entry bar waiting for an equation, pre-populated with y =.
- Click into the text box at the top.
- Type a standard mathematical equation. For example, type
x^2(which represents x squared). - Press the Return (Enter) key.
Grapher will instantly draw a perfect parabola on the grid. To explore the graph, you can click and drag the grid to pan around, or use the scroll wheel on your mouse (or pinch gesture on your trackpad) to zoom in and out smoothly.
Adding Multiple Equations and Using the Equation Palette
You are not limited to a single line. To compare multiple equations, look at the bottom left corner of the window and click the small Plus (+) button. Select “New Equation”. A new entry bar will appear, allowing you to plot a second line in a different color.
Typing complex mathematics (like integrals, summations, or Greek symbols like Pi) on a standard QWERTY keyboard is difficult. To solve this, Grapher includes a visual palette.
- Look at the far right side of the equation entry bar.
- Click the small button that looks like a sum symbol (∑).
- This opens the Equation Palette.
This floating window provides clickable buttons for roots, fractions, matrices, calculus operators, and complex symbols. Clicking any button inserts the correct mathematical formatting directly into your equation bar.
Exporting Your Work
Grapher is incredibly useful for creating visuals for research papers or homework assignments. Once you have perfected a graph, you can easily export it.
You can simply highlight the equation in the left sidebar, press Command + C to copy, and paste it directly into Apple Pages or Microsoft Word as a perfectly rendered image.
For higher quality, click File in the top menu bar, select Export, and choose a professional format like PDF or EPS, which preserves the graph as a scalable vector graphic so it never loses resolution, no matter how large it is printed.
