How to Factory Reset an iPad

Whether you are planning to sell your old iPad on eBay, hand it down to a younger family member, or send it back to Apple for a trade-in discount, you absolutely must wipe the device completely clean before it leaves your hands.

An iPad is essentially a digital vault containing your emails, banking apps, saved passwords, private messages, and personal photos. Simply deleting apps from the home screen one by one is not enough to protect your privacy, as the underlying account data remains cached in the system memory.

To safely transfer ownership, you must perform a complete factory reset. This process permanently deletes every piece of personal data, removes your Apple ID, turns off the Activation Lock security feature, and returns the iPad’s software to the exact blank state it was in when it first came out of the box.

Crucial Step 1: Back Up Your Data First

A factory reset is permanent and irreversible. Once you press the final button, all your photos, documents, and game saves will be instantly destroyed.

Before you begin, ensure your data is safely backed up to Apple’s servers so you can easily transfer it to a new device.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
2. Tap on your name at the very top of the left-hand sidebar.
3. Tap on iCloud on the right side of the screen.
4. Tap on iCloud Backup.
5. Tap Back Up Now and wait for the progress bar to finish. (Ensure you are connected to a strong Wi-Fi network and your iPad has plenty of battery charge).

Crucial Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud (Activation Lock)

This is the most common mistake people make when selling an iPad. If you erase the device without signing out of your Apple ID first, Apple’s anti-theft system (Activation Lock) remains permanently engaged. The new owner will be greeted with a security screen demanding your email address and password to unlock the tablet, rendering it completely useless to them.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name at the top of the left sidebar.
3. Scroll down to the very bottom of the right-hand screen and tap the red Sign Out button.
4. You will be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to confirm. This action turns off the “Find My” tracking feature and disables Activation Lock.
5. When asked if you want to keep a copy of your data on the iPad, ignore the toggles and just tap Sign Out again in the top corner.

Step 3: Factory Reset the iPad

Now that your data is backed up and the security locks are disabled, you can safely wipe the hard drive.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap on General in the left sidebar.
3. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the General menu and tap on Transfer or Reset iPad.
4. Tap the button at the bottom of the screen that says Erase All Content and Settings.
5. A warning screen will appear explaining exactly what is about to be deleted. Tap Continue.
6. Enter your iPad passcode (the four or six-digit PIN you use to unlock the screen).
7. A final, red warning box will pop up. Tap Erase iPad to confirm.

The screen will immediately turn black and display the white Apple logo with a loading bar beneath it. The iPad is now securely erasing the encryption keys to your data.

This process usually takes less than five minutes. You will know the wipe is complete when the screen turns back on and displays the familiar “Hello” welcome screen in various languages. Do not proceed past this screen. You can now press the power button to turn the iPad off and safely hand it over to the new owner.
