How to Enable the Dark Mode in the Google Drive Web App

For years, Google Drive on the web was only available in a blindingly bright white interface. While mobile users enjoyed a dark theme, desktop users working late at night were left squinting at their monitors. Recently, Google finally rolled out official native support for Dark Mode on the Google Drive web application. Enabling this feature swaps the bright white backgrounds for a sleek, dark grey canvas, which drastically reduces eye strain in low-light environments and can even save a marginal amount of power on OLED monitors.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Drive

Because this is a native Google Drive setting, you no longer need to rely on third-party browser extensions or experimental Chrome flags to invert the colours.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com. Log in to your Google Account.
  2. In the top-right corner of the screen, just to the left of your profile picture, click on the Gear icon.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. The Settings overlay will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab on the left-hand side.
  5. Scroll down the main settings list until you find the section titled Appearance.
  6. You will see three options: Light, Dark, and Device default.
  7. Select Dark to instantly apply the dark theme.

Understanding the “Device Default” Option

If you choose “Device default” (which is often the smartest choice), Google Drive will automatically sync its appearance with your computer’s operating system settings.

For example, if your Windows 11 PC or your Mac is scheduled to switch from Light Mode to Dark Mode automatically at sunset, Google Drive will seamlessly detect this system-wide change and adjust its own colour scheme to match, ensuring you never have to manually toggle the setting again.
