How to Embed Interactive 3D Models in Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations

For decades, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations have relied on static images (JPEGs, PNGs) or simple 2D vector shapes to convey visual information. If you needed to show a complex object—like a new product design, an architectural layout, or a biological cell—you had to insert multiple photos from different angles or link to an external video.

Modern versions of PowerPoint (Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2019, and newer) have completely changed this by introducing native support for 3D Models.

Instead of a flat picture, you can insert a fully rendered 3D object directly onto your slide. During your presentation, you (or your audience, if you share the file) can click and drag to rotate the object 360 degrees, tilt it up and down, and zoom in on specific details, entirely within PowerPoint.

Step 1: Supported 3D Formats

Before you begin, ensure your 3D model is in a format PowerPoint can understand. PowerPoint natively supports the following standard 3D file types:

  • .glb and .gltf (Highly recommended, as they efficiently package textures and the model into a single file)
  • .obj (A very common format, but requires an accompanying .mtl file for textures)
  • .fbx (Often used for animated 3D models)
  • .stl (Common in 3D printing)
  • .3mf

Step 2: Inserting a 3D Model

If you don’t have your own 3D model, Microsoft provides a large online library of free, high-quality models you can use to test the feature.

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation and navigate to a blank slide.
  2. Click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon.
  3. In the Illustrations group, click on 3D Models.
  4. You will see two options:
    • This Device… (Choose this if you have a .glb or .obj file saved on your hard drive).
    • Stock 3D Models… (Choose this to browse Microsoft’s online library).

If you choose the Stock library, search for “Drone” or “Heart”, select a model, and click Insert.

Step 3: Manipulating the Model on the Slide

Once the model loads onto your slide, you will notice a unique control element in the direct center of the bounding box: a circular icon with curved arrows.

  • To Rotate: Click and hold that center icon. Drag your mouse in any direction to freely rotate the 3D model in three-dimensional space.
  • To Resize: Click and drag any of the standard sizing handles on the corners of the bounding box.
  • To Pan: Hold the Shift key while clicking and dragging the center icon to pan the model left, right, up, or down within its bounding box.

Step 4: Using the 3D Model Ribbon Tab

When a 3D model is selected, a new 3D Model tab appears on the Ribbon, offering powerful formatting options:

  • 3D Model Views: This gallery provides pre-set camera angles (e.g., Top, Front, Left, Isometric). Clicking one instantly snaps your model to that exact orientation.
  • Pan & Zoom: Clicking this button reveals a magnifying glass icon next to your model. You can click and drag this icon up or down to zoom deep into a specific part of the model (like zooming into the cockpit of an airplane model).

Step 5: The Magic of the Morph Transition

The true power of 3D models in PowerPoint is unlocked when combined with the Morph slide transition. This allows you to create cinematic, fluid animations without touching a video editor.

  1. Insert a 3D model on Slide 1 and position it (e.g., looking at the front of a car).
  2. Right-click Slide 1 in the thumbnail pane and select Duplicate Slide.
  3. On Slide 2, select the 3D model, rotate it to the back, and scale it up to zoom in on the taillights.
  4. With Slide 2 selected, go to the Transitions tab and select Morph.

When you present, PowerPoint will automatically calculate the difference between Slide 1 and Slide 2 and smoothly rotate, pan, and zoom the 3D model from the first position to the second position right before your audience’s eyes.
