Microsoft Bing utilizes a highly aggressive SafeSearch filtering system. Designed primarily to keep corporate networks and family computers free from explicit imagery, mature content, and violent media, Bing actively censors search results by default. If you search for certain anatomical terms, controversial artistic imagery, or mature news topics, Bing will automatically hide the most relevant results.
If you are an adult conducting legitimate research or simply prefer an unrestricted browsing experience, you must manually disable this censorship layer. Fortunately, Microsoft provides a straightforward toggle to turn it off completely.
Understanding Bing’s Three Filtering Levels
Before you adjust the settings, it is helpful to understand how Bing categorizes its SafeSearch parameters:
- Strict: The most aggressive setting. It filters out adult text, images, and videos from your search results. It is the default setting for accounts registered to users under 18.
- Moderate (Default for Adults): This setting filters out adult images and videos, but it will return explicit text links if your search query specifically demands them.
- Off: Completely disables all filtering. Bing will display all indexed content, including explicit imagery, matching your search query.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Desktop Browser)
You can quickly disable the filter directly from the main Bing homepage or any search results page.
- Open your web browser and navigate to bing.com.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen and click on the three horizontal lines (the hamburger menu icon).
- A dropdown menu will appear. Look for the SafeSearch option (it will likely say “Moderate” next to it). Click on it.
- You will be taken to the Settings page. Under the SafeSearch section, select the radio button next to Off.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the blue Save button.

How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Mobile Browser)
If you are using Safari or Chrome on your smartphone to access Bing, the layout is compressed, but the process is similar.
- Navigate to bing.com on your mobile device.
- Tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner.
- Tap on Settings from the menu.
- Tap on More to expand the full settings list.
- Locate the SafeSearch section.
- Tap the option for Off.
- Scroll down and tap Save.
Why Is the “Off” Option Greyed Out?
Occasionally, you may navigate to the Bing settings page and find that the “Off” option is physically locked, greyed out, or automatically reverts to “Strict.” This is not a glitch; it means you are not authorized to change the setting.
This happens in two primary scenarios:
- Network Enforcement: If you are browsing on a corporate office network, a university campus Wi-Fi, or a public library computer, the IT administrators have likely configured the network router to enforce “Strict SafeSearch” on Bing. Bing detects this network rule and locks the setting in your browser. You cannot bypass it without leaving the network or using a VPN.
- Microsoft Account Age Restrictions: If you are logged into a Microsoft Account (e.g., your Xbox or Outlook email account), and the birthdate on that account indicates you are under 18 years old, Microsoft legally enforces the Strict setting.
