Mozilla Firefox includes a highly capable built-in password manager designed to generate, securely store, and auto-fill your credentials across the web. While this is extremely convenient, you might prefer to use a dedicated, cross-platform password manager (such as 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass) to handle your security. If you have a third-party extension installed, having Firefox constantly popping up and offering to save your passwords at the exact same time your extension does can be incredibly annoying. To avoid this conflict, you should completely disable Firefox’s native password manager.
How to Disable the Built-In Password Manager
You can turn off password saving directly in the privacy settings menu.
- Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Click the Application Menu button (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down the page until you find the Logins and Passwords section.
- Locate the checkbox labelled Ask to save logins and passwords for websites.
- Click this checkbox to uncheck it.
- Optionally, you can also uncheck Autofill logins and passwords just below it.
Firefox will immediately stop intercepting your login forms. You will no longer receive the drop-down prompts asking to save your credentials when you create a new account, leaving your third-party password manager extension to handle the task exclusively without any overlapping UI elements.
