If you regularly use WhatsApp from your computer via the web interface or desktop app, the default bright white theme can cause significant eye strain during long messaging sessions, particularly in the evenings or in low-light environments. WhatsApp Web includes a native dark mode that switches the entire interface to comfortable shades of dark grey and charcoal, dramatically reducing glare and making extended sessions much easier on the eyes.
How to Enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp Web or Desktop App
- Open your browser and navigate to web.whatsapp.com, or open the WhatsApp Desktop application if you have it installed on your Windows or Mac computer.
- If you are not already logged in, scan the QR code displayed on screen using your WhatsApp mobile app: on your phone, tap the three dots (⋮) > Linked Devices > Link a Device, and point your camera at the QR code.
- Once logged in, look at the left-hand panel above your list of recent conversations. In the top right area of this panel, click the Menu icon (three vertical dots, or ⋮ symbol).
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the Settings panel, click on Theme.
- A small popup window will appear with three options:
- Light: The standard white theme (default).
- Dark: Forces the interface to always display in dark mode regardless of your computer’s settings.
- System default: Automatically mirrors your operating system’s current appearance setting. If your Windows 11 or macOS is set to Dark Mode, WhatsApp Web will be dark. If you switch your OS to Light Mode, WhatsApp Web will follow.
- Select Dark (or “System default” if you prefer automatic switching).
- Click OK.
The entire WhatsApp Web interface will instantly change. The chat background, message bubbles, panel backgrounds, and text input area all switch to dark tones immediately without requiring a page reload.
Does Dark Mode Sync Between Your Phone and Computer?
No. WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp on your smartphone have independent theme settings. Enabling dark mode on WhatsApp Web does not change the theme on your phone, and vice versa. You need to configure the theme preference separately on each device.
To enable dark mode on your iPhone’s WhatsApp app, go to your iPhone’s Settings > Display & Brightness and select Dark — WhatsApp for iOS follows the system-wide appearance. On Android, open WhatsApp, tap the three dots > Settings > Chats > Theme and select Dark.
