How to Change the Homepage in Mozilla Firefox

By default, when you open Mozilla Firefox, it displays the built-in “Firefox Home” page, featuring a search bar and a personalised grid of your most frequently visited websites. While this is a useful starting point for many users, you may prefer Firefox to automatically load a specific website the moment you open a new window — whether that is your company’s intranet portal, your favourite news source, or a custom dashboard. Firefox makes this simple to configure.

Understanding Firefox’s Homepage Options

Firefox differentiates between three related settings, and it is worth understanding each one:

• Homepage: The page that loads when you click the house icon in the toolbar, or when you first open a new Firefox window.
• New Tab Page: The page that appears when you open a new tab (Ctrl+T / Cmd+T). This can be set separately from the homepage.
• Startup Page: Whether Firefox opens your homepage or restores your previous browsing session when you launch the app.

How to Set a Custom Homepage URL

1. Open Mozilla Firefox on your computer.
2. Click the Menu button (three horizontal lines, commonly called the hamburger menu) in the top-right corner of the browser window.
3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
4. On the left-hand sidebar, click on Home.
5. Locate the section labelled Homepage and new windows.
6. Click the dropdown menu next to this label (it will currently show “Firefox Home (Default)”) and select Custom URLs…
7. A text input box will appear directly below. Type or paste the full URL of the website you want to use as your homepage (for example, https://www.bbc.co.uk or https://mail.google.com).

Firefox saves your changes automatically as you type. You can immediately verify the change by clicking the Home button (the house icon) in your toolbar, or by opening a new Firefox window.

How to Set Multiple Tabs as Your Homepage

If you begin every workday by opening the same set of websites (for example, your email, your task manager, and a news site), you can configure Firefox to open all of them simultaneously as a group of tabs every time you launch a new window.

1. First, open each of the websites you want in their own separate tabs in Firefox.
2. Click the Menu button > Settings > Home.
3. Under the “Homepage and new windows” section, change the dropdown to Custom URLs… if it is not already set to that.
4. Click the Use Current Pages button located just below the URL text box.
5. Firefox will automatically populate the text box with the URLs of all your currently open tabs, separated by pipe characters (|).
6. Now, every time you open a new Firefox window, all those sites will launch together as a multi-tab session.

How to Restore Firefox’s Default Homepage

If you want to revert back to the original Firefox Home page at any time:

1. Go back to Menu > Settings > Home.
2. Click the dropdown next to “Homepage and new windows” and select Firefox Home (Default).

Your homepage will instantly revert to the standard Firefox start page with the search bar and Top Sites grid.
