How to Remove All Section Breaks in Microsoft Word Using Find and Replace

Section breaks are powerful formatting dividers in Microsoft Word that permit different margins, headers, footers, orientations, or page numbering schemes within the same file. However, when consolidating manuscripts, importing text from different collaborators, or fixing layout bugs, rogue section breaks often create persistent blank pages and unexpected shifts between portrait and landscape modes.

Attempting to locate and manually delete every section break across a lengthy document of dozens or hundreds of pages is exhausting and prone to missing hidden breaks. Fortunately, Microsoft Word’s advanced Find and Replace utility supports dedicated formatting codes to purge all section breaks simultaneously.

Step 1: Reveal Formatting Marks

Before purging section breaks, making invisible dividers visible ensures you can verify your document’s layout structure:

  1. Navigate to the Home tab on the Word ribbon.
  2. In the Paragraph group, click the Show/Hide ¶ button (or press the shortcut Ctrl + * on Windows or Command + 8 on Mac).
  3. Scroll through your document; section breaks will now appear as double dotted lines accompanied by the label Section Break (Next Page) or Section Break (Continuous).

Step 2: Open Find and Replace

To launch the global replacement dialogue:

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + H on Windows (or press Ctrl + F, click the magnifying glass icon, and choose Replace).
  2. In the dialogue box, select the Replace tab.
  3. If the window only shows basic options, click the More >> button in the bottom-left corner to expand advanced search parameters.

Step 3: Enter the Section Break Special Code

Word uses the caret symbol combined with the letter b as the escape sequence for section breaks:

  1. Click inside the Find what text box.
  2. Type the following code:
^b
  1. Alternatively, you can click the Special button at the bottom of the expanded dialogue and select Section Break from the list; Word will automatically insert ^b into the field.
  2. Click inside the Replace with field and ensure it remains completely empty. (Do not enter a space or any other characters).
  3. Click Replace All.

Word will scan the entire document, remove every section break, and present an alert stating: “All done. We made X replacements.”

Important Formatting Warning

In Microsoft Word, section formatting (such as page margins, header text, and column layout) is stored inside the section break marker that follows that section. When you delete a section break, the text preceding that break automatically assumes the layout and margin settings of the following section.

After running Replace All, perform a quick visual review of your headers, page numbers, and margins to confirm that standard document uniformity has been successfully achieved.
