How to Keep Text Together on the Same Page in Microsoft Word

When you format a large document in Microsoft Word, you will inevitably run into pagination issues. A heading might get stranded at the very bottom of a page while its associated paragraph gets pushed to the next page, or a multi-line bulleted list might get awkwardly chopped in half across a page break.

Many users try to fix this by repeatedly pressing the “Enter” key to shove the text down to the next page. However, the moment you edit the text above it, your manual spacing will be destroyed. Instead, you should use Word’s built-in “Keep with next” and “Keep lines together” formatting rules.

The Difference Between “Keep with next” and “Keep lines together”

Before you fix the issue, you must understand which rule applies to your specific problem:

• Keep lines together: This prevents a single, multi-line paragraph from being split across two pages. It forces the entire paragraph to move to the next page if it doesn’t fit on the current one.
• Keep with next: This binds two separate paragraphs together. It ensures that the selected paragraph (like a section heading) always stays on the exact same page as the paragraph immediately following it.

How to Prevent a Paragraph from Splitting

If half of your paragraph is on page 1, and the rest is on page 2, do the following:

1. Click anywhere inside the paragraph that is being split.
2. Click the Home tab in the ribbon.
3. Locate the “Paragraph” group and click the tiny arrow icon in the bottom-right corner to open the Paragraph Settings dialog box.
4. Click on the Line and Page Breaks tab at the top of the window.
5. Check the box labeled Keep lines together.
6. Click OK.

The entire paragraph will now jump to the next page to remain intact.

How to Keep a Heading with its Paragraph

If you have a bold section heading stuck at the very bottom of a page, separated from its body text:

1. Click anywhere inside the heading text (do not select the paragraph below it).
2. Open the Paragraph Settings dialog box (Home tab > Paragraph group arrow).
3. Click on the Line and Page Breaks tab.
4. Check the box labeled Keep with next.
5. Click OK.

Word will now securely glue the heading to the paragraph below it. If the paragraph is forced to the next page, the heading will automatically travel with it, completely eliminating the stranded heading problem.
