The Phantom Disconnect
Windows 11 includes a power-saving feature known as USB Selective Suspend. This feature allows the operating system to automatically cut power to specific USB ports if it determines the connected device is idle. This is highly beneficial for extending the battery life of laptops. However, this aggressive power management often causes problems with peripherals that require a continuous, uninterrupted connection, such as external hard drives, audio interfaces, high-end gaming mice, or VR headsets. If you frequently hear the Windows “device disconnected” chime when you haven’t touched a peripheral for a few minutes, or if your external drive suddenly vanishes from File Explorer, USB Selective Suspend is likely the culprit.
Disabling USB Selective Suspend
To stop Windows 11 from automatically suspending your USB devices, you need to disable this specific power management feature within your active Power Plan settings.
Press the Windows Key, type Edit power plan, and hit Enter. This will open the Control Panel directly to your current power plan settings. Click on the link that says Change advanced power settings. A small dialog box will appear containing a list of hardware components. Scroll down and locate USB settings, then click the small plus (+) icon next to it to expand the category. Below that, expand USB selective suspend setting. You will see an option for “Setting” (or “On battery” and “Plugged in” if you are using a laptop). Click on the word “Enabled” to reveal a drop-down menu, and change it to Disabled. If you are on a laptop, you may want to disable it for both battery and plugged-in states, depending on how critical your USB devices are. Click Apply, then OK. Windows will now provide continuous, uninterrupted power to all your connected USB peripherals.
