The Intrusive Credential Prompt
Windows 11, particularly when using Microsoft Edge as your primary browser, heavily pushes its integrated password management system (Microsoft Wallet / Windows Credentials). Whenever you click into a username or password field on a website or within a supported desktop application, Windows automatically pops up a small window suggesting a saved password or offering to generate a strong new one. While convenient if you rely entirely on Microsoft’s ecosystem, this auto-suggest feature is highly intrusive if you use a dedicated third-party password manager (like Bitwarden or 1Password), as the two systems will constantly fight for screen space and your attention.
Disabling Edge and Windows Autofill
To rely solely on your chosen security tools and stop Windows 11 from automatically suggesting passwords, you must disable the autofill features within Microsoft Edge and the core Windows settings.
First, open Microsoft Edge. Click the three horizontal dots in the top right, select Settings, and go to Profiles > Passwords. Toggle off Offer to save passwords and Autofill passwords and passkeys. Next, you must disable the system-level credential prompts. Press the Windows key + I to open the main Windows Settings. Navigate to Accounts on the left sidebar, then click on Sign-in options. Scroll down to the “Additional settings” section. Look for an option related to “Autofill” or “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device” and toggle it off. This ensures Windows stops trying to intercept your login screens across both the web and native applications.
