The Unexpected Webcam
Windows 11 boasts tight integration with its built-in hardware, particularly webcams and microphones, to facilitate quick video calls via Microsoft Teams and other pre-installed communication apps. However, some users experience a jarring issue where the Camera app seems to launch automatically upon booting the PC, waking from sleep, or even randomly while working. This is not only incredibly distracting, but it also raises immediate privacy concerns, as the webcam indicator light suddenly turning on without your direct input can feel intrusive and alarming.
Revoking Camera Permissions
To stop Windows 11 from automatically launching the Camera app or allowing background processes to access your webcam unexpectedly, you must restrict camera access at the system privacy level.
Open the Settings app by pressing `Win + I`. On the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security. Scroll down to the “App permissions” section and click on Camera. Here, you have granular control over which applications can use your webcam. First, scroll down the list and locate the default Camera app. Toggle its switch to the Off position to prevent it from running in the background or launching without explicit permission. Next, look through the list of other apps (like Teams, Skype, or third-party software). If you see any app that you do not actively use for video conferencing, revoke its camera access as well. For the strictest privacy, you can turn off the master switch labeled Let apps access your camera at the very top of the page, which physically blocks all software from turning on the webcam until you manually re-enable it.
