The Vanishing Safety Net
Windows 11 System Restore is a critical safety net, allowing you to roll back your computer’s state to a previous point in time if a bad driver update or a rogue software installation causes system instability. However, you might occasionally go to use System Restore only to find that the restore point you specifically created last month has mysteriously vanished. Windows 11 automatically manages the disk space allocated to System Protection. When this allocated space fills up, Windows will automatically delete the oldest restore points to make room for new ones. If the maximum storage limit is set too low, your restore points will be constantly and aggressively purged.
Increasing System Protection Storage Limits
To preserve your older backups and stop Windows 11 from automatically deleting your restore points so frequently, you need to increase the maximum disk space limit dedicated to the System Protection feature.
Press the Windows key, type Create a restore point, and press Enter to open the System Properties window directly to the System Protection tab. In the “Protection Settings” box, look for your primary system drive (usually labeled `Windows (C:) (System)`). Click to highlight it, and then click the Configure button located just below the list. A new dialog box will open. Locate the slider under the “Disk Space Usage” section. By default, this might be set to a very small percentage (like 1% or 2%). Click and drag the Max Usage slider to the right to increase the allocation. Bumping it to 5% or 10% (depending on your total drive size) is usually sufficient to hold several months’ worth of restore points. Click Apply, then OK. Windows will now use this larger storage pool before it begins automatically pruning your older restore points.
