How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Changing Your Default Printer

If you use a laptop in multiple locations—such as a home office and a corporate workplace—you likely have several printers installed on your Windows 11 machine. By default, Windows utilizes a feature called “Let Windows manage my default printer.” This feature automatically sets your default printer to whichever device you used last.

While this sounds helpful, it often results in disaster. If you print a shipping label to a small thermal printer in the morning, and then try to print a 50-page colour report to your main laser printer in the afternoon, Windows will attempt to send the 50-page report to the tiny thermal printer because it was used “last.” You must disable this feature to lock your default printer in place.

How to Stop Windows from Changing Your Default Printer

You can turn off this automatic management feature directly within the Bluetooth & Devices settings.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. In the main window on the right, click on Printers & scanners.
  4. Scroll down to the “Printer preferences” section near the bottom of the page.
  5. You will see a toggle switch labelled Let Windows manage my default printer.
  6. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Once you disable this feature, Windows will stop reorganizing your printer hierarchy. You can now scroll back up the list of installed printers, click on your preferred main printer, and click the Set as default button. Windows 11 will permanently lock this printer as your default device until you manually choose to change it.
