How to Safely Delete the Windows 11 ‘Prefetch’ Folder (Is It Safe?)

If you dive deep into your Windows 11 C:\Windows directory, you will find a folder named Prefetch containing hundreds of files ending in .pf. This folder is an essential component of the Windows memory manager. Whenever you launch an application, Windows monitors exactly which chunks of data the app pulls from the hard drive and writes that sequence into a Prefetch file. The next time you open the app, Windows pre-loads that exact sequence directly into your RAM, making the app launch incredibly fast.

Many PC optimization articles recommend deleting this folder to “save space” or “speed up your PC.” This is usually terrible advice. Deleting the Prefetch folder will actually make your computer drastically slower for the next few days, as Windows has to rebuild the cache from scratch. However, if a specific application is constantly crashing on launch due to a corrupted memory mapping, safely deleting its specific Prefetch file is the only way to fix it.

How to Safely Delete the Windows 11 Prefetch Folder

You should only delete the contents of this folder if you are actively troubleshooting application crashes.

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type the word prefetch and press Enter.
  3. A security warning will pop up stating “You don’t currently have permission to access this folder.” Click the Continue button to permanently grant yourself administrative access.
  4. The folder will open, revealing hundreds of .pf files.
  5. To fix a specific crashing app (like Photoshop), scroll through the list, find the file named PHOTOSHOP.EXE-[RandomLetters].pf, right-click it, and select Delete.
  6. If you are experiencing widespread system instability and want to force Windows to rebuild the entire prefetch database from scratch, press Ctrl + A to highlight every file in the folder.
  7. Press the Delete key on your keyboard. (If you are prompted that a specific file is “in use,” simply click “Skip”).

Close the folder and restart your computer. Your PC will boot slightly slower the first time, and applications will take a second longer to launch. However, as you use your PC over the next few days, Windows will silently generate brand-new, uncorrupted Prefetch files, restoring your system’s speed and stability.
