How to Enable the Windows 11 ‘Local Group Policy Editor’ (gpedit.msc) in Home Edition

The Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) is an incredibly powerful administration tool in Windows. It allows you to disable forced Windows updates, turn off telemetry, remove the Cortana/Copilot integrations, and deeply customize the behavior of the operating system without having to mess with dangerous Registry edits.

However, Microsoft intentionally restricts this tool exclusively to the Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 11. If you purchase a standard laptop with Windows 11 Home, typing gpedit.msc into the Run dialog will simply throw an error. Fortunately, the actual binaries and packages for the Group Policy Editor are still physically present on your Windows 11 Home hard drive; they are just dormant. You can use a batch script to awaken and install them.

How to Install gpedit.msc in Windows 11 Home

You must create and run a custom batch script to tell Windows to install the dormant packages.

1. Right-click on your empty desktop, select New, and click Text Document.
2. Open the new text file and carefully paste the following script exactly as written:

   dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~3*.mum >List.txt
   dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~3*.mum >>List.txt
   for /f %%i in ('findstr /i . List.txt 2^>nul') do dism /online /norestart /add-package:"%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\%%i"
   pause

3. Click File in the top menu, then select Save As…
4. In the “Save as type” drop-down menu, change it from “Text Documents (*.txt)” to All Files (*.*).
5. Name the file gpedit-enabler.bat and save it to your desktop.
6. Right-click the new gpedit-enabler.bat file on your desktop and select Run as administrator.
7. A black command prompt window will open. It will take a few minutes as DISM installs the packages. Wait until it says “Press any key to continue…” and then close the window.

You have successfully unlocked the tool. Press Windows Key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter. The full Local Group Policy Editor will launch, granting your Windows 11 Home edition the same advanced administrative powers as a Pro machine.
