How to Delay a Screenshot in the Windows 11 Snipping Tool (Timer)

Taking a screenshot in Windows 11 is incredibly easy using the built-in Snipping Tool (accessed by pressing Windows Key + Shift + S). However, capturing specific user interface elements—such as a drop-down menu that disappears as soon as you press a key, or a hover-over tooltip—is notoriously difficult. The moment you activate the Snipping Tool, the menu you were trying to capture instantly vanishes.

To solve this problem, Microsoft included a hidden timer feature within the Snipping Tool app. This allows you to set a delay, giving you enough time to open the menu or tooltip before the screen freezes for the capture.

How to Set a Snipping Tool Delay

You cannot use the quick keyboard shortcut to access the timer; you must open the full Snipping Tool application.

  1. Click the Start button, type Snipping Tool, and press Enter to open the app.
  2. Look at the toolbar at the top of the Snipping Tool window. You will see an icon that looks like a small clock. This is the Delay snip button.
  3. Click the clock icon to open a drop-down menu.
  4. Select your preferred delay time: Snip in 3 seconds, Snip in 5 seconds, or Snip in 10 seconds.
  5. Once you have selected the delay, click the blue + New button in the top-left corner of the app.

As soon as you click “New,” the timer starts counting down in the background. You now have 3, 5, or 10 seconds to quickly navigate to the specific window, click the drop-down menu you want to capture, or hover your mouse over the specific tooltip.

When the timer expires, the screen will suddenly darken and freeze perfectly in place. You can then click and drag to highlight and capture the exact area of the screen you need, perfectly preserving the delicate drop-down menu before it can disappear.
