How to Connect a Bluetooth Speaker to Windows 11

Whether you want to listen to a podcast while working, boost the audio of a movie, or stream a Spotify playlist across the room without dealing with tangled cables, a Bluetooth speaker is an essential peripheral. While pairing a speaker to a smartphone is something most people do daily, connecting one to a desktop or laptop running Windows 11 requires a slightly different approach.

Windows 11 has streamlined the Bluetooth pairing process compared to previous operating systems, placing all the necessary controls directly into the modernized Action Center and the main Settings app.

How to Pair the Speaker for the First Time

Before you touch your computer, you must put your speaker into “Pairing Mode.” This process varies by manufacturer. Usually, you must turn the speaker on and then press and hold a dedicated Bluetooth button (or the power button) until a small LED begins rapidly flashing blue or white. Once the speaker is broadcasting its signal, move to your Windows 11 PC.

  1. Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen (your Taskbar) and click on the Network/Volume/Battery cluster of icons.
  2. The Quick Settings panel will fly up. Look for the Bluetooth button.
  3. If the Bluetooth button is dark grey, click it once to turn the Bluetooth radio On (the button will turn blue).
  4. Right-click on the Bluetooth button and select Go to Settings from the small drop-down menu.
  5. The main Windows Settings app will open. At the very top of the screen, click the large button labelled Add device.
  6. A black pop-up window will appear asking what kind of device you want to add. Click the first option: Bluetooth (Audio, mice, keyboards, phones, pens, controllers, and more).
  7. Windows will begin scanning the room. Within a few seconds, the name of your speaker (e.g., “JBL Flip 5” or “Bose SoundLink”) will appear in the list.
  8. Click the name of your speaker.

Windows will display a “Connecting…” message. Within a few seconds, you should hear a chime from the speaker itself confirming the connection, and Windows will declare the device “Connected.”

How to Reconnect a Paired Speaker

You only have to perform the pairing process once. Windows 11 will permanently remember your speaker.

The next time you want to use it, simply turn the speaker on. If Bluetooth is enabled on your PC, Windows 11 should automatically detect it and instantly route your computer’s audio through the speaker within three to five seconds without any manual intervention.

How to Switch Between Your Speakers and Headphones

If your speaker is successfully connected but the sound is still playing out of your laptop’s built-in speakers, you need to manually change the audio output destination.

  1. Click the Volume icon on your Taskbar.
  2. Look at the volume slider in the Quick Settings panel. To the right of the slider, click the small arrow icon (Select a sound output).
  3. You will see a list of every audio device currently connected to your PC.
  4. Click on the name of your Bluetooth speaker.

All system audio will immediately switch over to the external speaker.
