How to Turn Off the Windows 11 Start Menu Search History

The Start Menu Surveillance Vector

Whenever you click the Windows 11 Start Menu and begin typing to find a file or application, the operating system meticulously records your query. The next time you open the search interface, Windows will prominently display a list of your recent searches, purportedly to help you find things faster. However, if you share your computer or frequently share your screen during video conferences, this feature will inevitably broadcast your private, potentially sensitive search terms to anyone watching.

How to Turn Off Search History

You can instruct the Windows 11 Privacy & Security matrix to completely disable this surveillance and purge its existing records.

1. Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
3. Scroll down the main pane until you locate the “Windows permissions” section, then click on Search permissions.
4. Scroll down this new page until you find the section titled History.
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Search history on this device.
6. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position.
7. To destroy the data it has already collected, click the Clear device search history button located immediately below the toggle.

The operating system will instantly purge its database. The next time you click the Start Menu search bar, the “Recent” list will be completely blank, ensuring your future queries remain entirely private.
