The Shifting Tree
The left-hand navigation pane in Windows 11 File Explorer is designed to give you a quick overview of your folder hierarchy. However, by default, Windows employs a dynamic behavior called “Expand to open folder.” If you double-click a folder in the main right-hand window to enter it, the left-hand navigation pane automatically expands its folder tree to mirror your exact location. If you are digging deep into a complex project directory, this causes the left pane to constantly scroll, shift, and expand wildly, completely disorienting you and burying your pinned Quick Access folders at the very top.
Locking the Navigation Pane
To keep your folder tree static and stop Windows 11 from automatically expanding folders in the left-hand navigation pane as you browse, you must disable this specific tracking feature within the File Explorer options.
Open any File Explorer window. Look at the top ribbon menu and click on the three horizontal dots (See more) located on the far right side. From the dropdown menu, select Options. A “Folder Options” dialogue box will appear. Click on the View tab at the top. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the “Advanced settings” list until you find the section labelled Navigation pane. Look for the checkbox labelled Expand to open folder. Click this checkbox so that it is completely unchecked. Click Apply and then OK. From now on, the left-hand pane will remain perfectly still, only expanding when you explicitly click the small arrow next to a folder name.
