The Shifting Printer Target
Windows 10 introduced a feature designed to be helpful for laptop users who travel between different offices or homes. By default, Windows will actively monitor which printer you use most frequently at your current location and automatically set that specific printer as your system-wide “Default Printer.”
While this sounds convenient, it usually causes chaos in a standard office environment. If you print a dozen pages to the main heavy-duty laser printer, but then quickly print one single photo to the specialized inkjet across the room, Windows will instantly switch your default printer to the inkjet. The next time you hit `Ctrl + P` to print a massive 50-page report, it will accidentally go to the wrong machine, wasting ink and paper. You can force Windows to respect a single, permanent default printer.
How to Turn Off Automatic Default Printers
You can disable this intelligent switching behavior in the Windows Settings app.
- Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings (or press
Windows Key + i). - Click on Devices.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Printers & scanners.
- Scroll down past the list of installed printers to the main settings area.
- Look for a checkbox labelled “Let Windows manage my default printer”.
- Uncheck this box.
Once disabled, Windows will stop moving the target. You can now scroll back up your list of printers, click on the exact printer you want to use every day, select Manage, and click Set as default. It will remain your default printer permanently, regardless of what other devices you occasionally print to.
