How to Show File Extensions in Windows 11

The Malicious Obfuscation Vector

By default, Windows 11 intentionally hides the file extension (the three or four letters following the period, like `.pdf` or `.exe`) of all known file types. This is marketed as a feature to simplify the interface for novice users, but it is actually a massive security vulnerability. Malicious actors frequently disguise executable viruses by naming them `Invoice.pdf.exe`. Because Windows hides the final `.exe`, the file appears to the user simply as `Invoice.pdf`. To protect yourself from these primitive social engineering attacks, you must force the kernel to render the true file extension at all times.

How to Show File Extensions

You must modify the core File Explorer parameters to override the default aesthetic settings.

1. Open the File Explorer (press the Windows Key + E).
2. Look at the primary toolbar running horizontally across the top of the window.
3. Click on the View button (it usually has a small icon of a list or a grid next to it).
4. A dropdown menu will appear. Scroll to the very bottom of this menu.
5. Hover your cursor over the word Show.
6. A secondary fly-out menu will appear to the right.
7. Click on File name extensions so that a small checkmark appears next to it.

The modification is global and instantaneous. Every single file on your entire hard drive will immediately reveal its true architectural nature. A Word document named `Budget` will instantly transform into `Budget.docx`, allowing you to visually verify its safety before double-clicking it.
