Windows 11 is notoriously aggressive when it comes to installing updates. If you leave your computer on overnight to render a massive video project or download a huge video game, you might wake up to find that Windows decided to forcefully restart your machine at 3:00 AM to install a minor security patch, completely ruining your progress.
If you have a critical workflow that absolutely cannot be interrupted by an unexpected reboot, you should temporarily pause all Windows Updates.
How to Pause Windows Updates
Windows 11 allows you to hit the “pause” button on all system updates for up to five weeks.
- Open the Windows 11 Settings app (press
Windows Key + I). - In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Windows Update (it is usually located at the very bottom of the list).
- In the main window, look for the section labeled Pause updates.
- To the right of this label, click the dropdown menu that says “Pause for 1 week.”
- Select your desired timeframe from the list (you can choose anywhere from 1 week up to 5 weeks).
The moment you make your selection, the Windows Update screen will change, displaying a yellow pause icon and a message explicitly stating exactly which date updates will resume on.
How to Resume Updates Early
While pausing updates is fantastic for protecting a 48-hour video render, you should not leave your computer unpatched indefinitely, as you will miss critical security vulnerability fixes.
Once your critical work is finished, you can manually un-pause the system.
- Return to the Windows Update page in the Settings app.
- Click the large blue button at the top of the screen labeled Resume updates.
Windows will instantly connect to Microsoft’s servers, check for any patches it missed during the pause period, and begin downloading them.
