Windows 11 includes a large set of built-in productivity features, but many power users find them insufficient. For years, Microsoft’s own engineers have been developing a free, open-source toolkit called PowerToys that adds dozens of advanced utilities directly into Windows, filling the gaps that the standard operating system leaves behind.
PowerToys is not pre-installed on Windows 11 and must be downloaded separately. Once installed, it adds a suite of small, focused tools that dramatically improve window management, file renaming, colour picking, keyboard remapping, and much more.
How to Install PowerToys
- Open the Microsoft Store app from your Start menu.
- In the search bar at the top, type PowerToys.
- Click on Microsoft PowerToys in the search results (published by Microsoft Corporation).
- Click the blue Install button.
Once installed, the PowerToys settings app will appear in your system tray (the small icons area in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar, near the clock). Click the icon to open the settings dashboard and configure individual tools.
FancyZones: Advanced Window Layouts
While Windows 11’s built-in Snap Layouts offer basic arrangements, FancyZones allows you to design completely custom screen layouts of any size and shape.
- In the PowerToys settings, click FancyZones in the left sidebar and toggle it to On.
- Click Launch layout editor.
- Choose from a set of pre-built templates, or click Create new layout to draw your own custom grid.
- Once your layout is saved, hold the Shift key while dragging any window. A coloured overlay of your custom zones will appear on the screen. Drop the window into any zone to snap it perfectly into position.
PowerToys Run: A Faster App Launcher
The standard Windows search bar is slow and often cluttered with web results you did not ask for. PowerToys Run is a lightning-fast alternative.
- Enable PowerToys Run in the settings.
- Press Alt + Spacebar anywhere on your desktop.
- A clean, minimal search bar appears in the centre of your screen. Start typing the name of any application, file, folder, or setting. Results appear instantly as you type.
PowerToys Run can also perform quick calculations (type “2+2” and it will display “4”), open websites, and execute system commands.
Other Essential PowerToys Utilities
- Color Picker: Press Windows Key + Shift + C to activate a pixel-perfect colour picker. Hover over any element on your screen to instantly copy its exact HEX, RGB, or HSL colour code to your clipboard. This is invaluable for designers and web developers.
- PowerRename: Right-click a group of selected files in File Explorer. The “PowerRename” option allows you to batch rename files using search-and-replace rules and regular expressions, eliminating the need for third-party software.
- Keyboard Manager: Remap any key on your keyboard to any other key, or create custom keyboard shortcuts that trigger specific actions. This is particularly useful for users who switch between Mac and PC keyboards.
- Image Resizer: Right-click any image (or group of images) in File Explorer and select “Resize pictures.” You can instantly batch-resize images to pre-defined or custom dimensions without opening a photo editor.
