For decades, the Recycle Bin has been a permanent fixture on the Windows desktop. While it serves a crucial purpose by protecting you from accidental file deletions, many users prefer a completely clean, minimalist desktop without any clutter. If you pin the Recycle Bin to your Start Menu or rely on File Explorer to manage deleted files, you might want to remove the icon from your desktop entirely.
Unlike standard application shortcuts, you cannot simply right-click the Recycle Bin and select “Delete.” Windows 11 treats it as a protected system icon, requiring a specific settings menu to hide it.
How to Hide the Recycle Bin
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Windows 11 desktop.
- Select Personalize from the context menu to open the Settings app.
- In the Personalization menu, click on Themes.
- Scroll down to the “Related settings” section and click on Desktop icon settings.
- A small, classic Windows pop-up box will appear. Under the “Desktop Icons” section, uncheck the box next to “Recycle Bin”.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
The Recycle Bin icon will instantly vanish from your desktop. Rest assured, the Recycle Bin itself is still fully functional; deleted files will still be temporarily stored there, you just won’t see the icon staring back at you from your wallpaper.
How to Access the Hidden Recycle Bin
If you ever need to restore a deleted file or empty the trash, you can still access the Recycle Bin easily through File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E).
- Click on the address bar at the top of the window (where the folder path is displayed).
- Type Recycle Bin and press Enter.
You will instantly be taken into the Recycle Bin, where you can manage your deleted files exactly as you did before.
