How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin is designed to act as a safety net. When you delete a file in Windows 11, it is not immediately wiped from your hard drive; it sits in the Recycle Bin indefinitely, giving you the opportunity to recover the file if you realize you made a mistake. However, many users suddenly discover that files they deleted a few weeks ago have vanished from the Recycle Bin entirely. This happens because Windows 11 includes an automated maintenance feature called Storage Sense, which is often configured by default to silently permanently delete older files to free up disk space.

Understanding the Storage Sense Culprit

Storage Sense is a background utility that monitors your hard drive. When the drive starts getting full, or simply on a strict 30-day schedule, Storage Sense quietly empties the Recycle Bin without asking for your permission. If you prefer to manually manage your trash and want your deleted files to stay in the Recycle Bin forever until you explicitly tell Windows to empty it, you must disable this specific automation.

How to Stop the Automatic Deletion

You can change this behavior in the main Windows Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button and click the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. Ensure System is selected in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. On the right side of the window, scroll down and click on Storage.
  4. Under the “Storage management” section, locate the feature named Storage Sense.
  5. Do not click the main toggle switch. (Turning it completely off will also stop Windows from automatically deleting useless temporary system cache files, which you generally want to keep).
  6. Instead, click anywhere on the Storage Sense text (or the small right-facing arrow next to it) to open the detailed configuration menu.
  7. Scroll down to the section labelled Configure cleanup schedules.
  8. Look for the drop-down menu labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:.
  9. Click the drop-down menu and change the setting from “30 days” to Never.

Verifying the Change

Once you change that single drop-down menu to “Never,” your configuration is saved immediately. You do not need to click a save button or restart your computer. Windows 11 will continue to automatically clean up hidden, temporary system files in the background to save space, but it will absolutely never touch the files inside your Recycle Bin again until you right-click the icon on your desktop and manually select “Empty Recycle Bin.”
