How to Remove the Language Switcher from the Windows 11 Taskbar

If you use Windows 11 in multiple languages, or if you simply have multiple keyboard layouts installed (such as US English and UK English), Windows automatically places a small “Language Switcher” icon in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar, right next to the clock. While this is helpful for rapidly switching input methods, it can be an annoying visual distraction for users who prefer a clean, minimalist desktop and only ever use one keyboard layout.

Why the Language Switcher Appears

The Language Switcher (often displaying “ENG”, “FRA”, or “ESP”) only appears on the taskbar when Windows detects that more than one input method is installed on your system. Sometimes, major Windows updates or software installations will quietly add a secondary keyboard layout without your explicit permission, causing this icon to suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Method 1: Removing Unnecessary Keyboard Layouts

The cleanest way to remove the icon is to simply delete the secondary keyboard layouts you do not actually use. If only one layout exists on the system, the icon disappears automatically.

1. Open the Settings app (Windows Key + I).
2. Click on Time & language in the left-hand menu.
3. Click on Language & region.
4. Look at your list of installed languages under the “Preferred languages” section.
5. Click the three horizontal dots next to any language you do not use and select Remove.
6. If you only have one language listed, click the three dots next to it and select Language options. Check the “Keyboards” section and remove any secondary layouts (like removing the US keyboard if you only use the UK physical keyboard).

Method 2: Hiding the Icon Using Advanced Keyboard Settings

If you genuinely need multiple keyboard layouts but still want to hide the ugly taskbar icon, you can force Windows to bury it in a hidden floating menu instead.

1. Open the Settings app (Windows Key + I).
2. Navigate to Time & language > Typing.
3. Scroll down and click on Advanced keyboard settings.
4. Look for the section labelled “Switching input methods”.
5. Check the box next to Use the desktop language bar when it’s available.
6. Immediately below that, click the blue link that says Language bar options.
7. A small window will open. Under the “Language Bar” tab, select the Hidden radio button.
8. Click Apply and then OK.

The letters will instantly vanish from your taskbar, leaving you with a cleaner Windows 11 interface. You can still switch between your installed languages using the default keyboard shortcut: Windows Key + Spacebar.
