If you share a computer with family members or roommates, you probably have multiple user profiles set up. When someone moves out, gets their own computer, or simply stops using yours, their old user profile continues to consume valuable hard drive space with their saved files, downloaded apps, and temporary data. To free up storage and keep your system organized, you should delete the abandoned user profile. Windows 11 allows you to accomplish this easily through the Settings app.
Important Warnings Before You Begin
- Data Loss: Deleting a user profile permanently deletes everything associated with it. This includes the contents of their Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and Desktop folders. If they have any files they want to keep, they must copy them to a USB drive before you proceed.
- Administrator Rights: You cannot delete a user profile if you are logged in as a standard user. You must be logged in to an account that has “Administrator” privileges.
- Active Users: You cannot delete the account you are currently logged into. You must be logged into Account A to delete Account B.
How to Delete the User Profile via Settings
The modern Windows 11 Settings app is the safest and easiest place to manage accounts.
- Log in to your Administrator account.
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
- In the left-hand sidebar menu, click on Accounts.
- Scroll down the right side of the screen and locate the section labeled “Account settings.” Click on Other users.
- You will see a list of all the other profiles currently set up on the computer.
- Click on the specific user profile that you want to remove. A small menu will expand underneath it.
- Click the Remove button.
- A severe warning pop-up will appear, reminding you that this action will delete all of the user’s data, including their desktop, downloads, documents, photos, and music.
- To permanently erase the profile and all its files, click the Delete account and data button.
Windows will process the request. Depending on how much data the user had stored in their folders, this could take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Once finished, the profile will disappear from the list, and all the hard drive space it was consuming will be returned to the system.
