How to Change the Time Zone in Windows 11

Whether you are traveling for business, have recently moved across the country, or your computer simply failed to detect daylight saving time correctly, having the wrong time zone on your Windows 11 PC can cause significant issues. It affects calendar reminders, email timestamps, and even the security certificates required to browse the web. Fortunately, manually updating your time zone is a very quick process.

How to Change the Time Zone Manually

Windows 11 allows you to easily override the automatic time settings directly from the Settings app.

1. Look at the bottom right corner of your screen, where the clock and date are displayed on the taskbar.
2. Right-click directly on the clock.
3. From the small menu that appears, select Adjust date and time. This will open the correct page in the Windows Settings app.
4. Look for the setting labeled Set time zone automatically. If the toggle switch next to it is currently turned “On,” you must turn it Off. You cannot manually select a time zone while the automatic feature is active.
5. Once the automatic setting is disabled, locate the Time zone option just below it.
6. Click the drop-down menu next to “Time zone”.
7. Scroll through the extensive list of global regions and click on the correct time zone for your current location (e.g., “(UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)”).
8. Your taskbar clock will instantly update to reflect the new time.

How to Re-Enable Automatic Time Zones

If you travel frequently with a laptop, manually changing the time zone every time you land in a new city can be tedious. Windows 11 can handle this for you by utilizing location services to detect where you are.

1. Open the Settings app and navigate back to Time & language > Date & time.
2. First, ensure that Windows is allowed to know your location. Scroll down to the “Related settings” section and click on Location. Ensure “Location services” is toggled On.
3. Click the back arrow in the top left corner to return to the Date & time page.
4. Now, simply toggle the Set time zone automatically switch to the On position.
5. Windows will briefly communicate with Microsoft’s servers to determine your geographical location and adjust the clock accordingly.
