When you purchase a new laptop or install Windows 11 for the first time, the operating system automatically assigns your computer a randomly generated name, usually something cryptic like “DESKTOP-8G7H9KL”. While this does not affect how the computer runs, it makes it incredibly difficult to identify your specific machine on a local Wi-Fi network, when pairing Bluetooth devices, or when using features like Nearby Sharing. Changing your PC’s name to something recognizable (like “Office-Laptop” or “John-Desktop”) is a simple process.
Naming Rules to Keep in Mind
Before you rename your computer, be aware of Windows’ strict naming conventions:
- The name cannot exceed 15 characters.
- You cannot use spaces.
- You cannot use special characters like punctuation marks (e.g.,
! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + = _ { } [ ] | \ : ; " ' < > , . ? /). - You can only use standard letters (A-Z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-).
How to Rename Your PC via Settings
The easiest and most modern way to change your computer’s name is through the Windows 11 Settings app.
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (or press Windows Key + I).
- On the default System page, look at the very top of the window. You will see your current, cryptic PC name listed under a generic monitor icon.
- Click the blue Rename link located directly beneath the current computer name.
- A small dialogue box will appear titled “Rename your PC”. Type your new, desired computer name into the text box (for example,
Gaming-Rig-1). - Click Next.
Restarting to Apply Changes
Windows cannot change its network identity while it is actively running and connected to services. The system will prompt you that a restart is required.
- If you are ready to reboot immediately, click Restart now.
- If you are in the middle of working on documents, click Restart later. The name change will automatically take effect the next time you manually reboot or shut down the computer.
Once the computer restarts, you can open the Settings app again to verify that your new name is proudly displayed at the top of the System page. Your PC will now show up with this new, recognizable name on your local network router and when attempting Bluetooth pairings.
