The Spotlight Envy
If you ask a long-time Mac user what feature they miss the most when they are forced to use a Windows PC at work, the answer is almost always the same: Spotlight Search.
On a Mac, pressing Command + Spacebar brings up a clean, minimalist search bar right in the dead center of the screen. It is lightning fast, it finds apps instantly, it does math, and it disappears the moment you launch your program.
On Windows 11, pressing the Windows Key opens the Start Menu, which is cluttered with pinned apps, “Recommended” files, web search results from Bing, and often feels sluggish. It lacks the surgical precision of the Mac experience.
However, Microsoft actually builds a perfect, 1:1 clone of macOS Spotlight for Windows 11. They just don’t install it by default. It is hidden inside an official suite of tools called Microsoft PowerToys, and the specific feature is called PowerToys Run.
Installing Microsoft PowerToys
Because PowerToys is an official Microsoft product, you do not need to hunt for an executable file on the internet. You can install it directly from the secure Microsoft Store.
- Open the Windows 11 Start Menu and search for Microsoft Store. Open it.
- In the Store’s search bar, type PowerToys.
- Look for the app with the multi-colored logo published by Microsoft Corporation and click Install.
Once installed, open the PowerToys application. You will see a left sidebar containing dozens of power-user tools (like a color picker and advanced window manager). Scroll down and click on PowerToys Run, ensuring the toggle switch at the top is turned On.
Using the Spotlight Clone
The moment PowerToys Run is enabled, your daily navigation changes forever.
By default, the trigger shortcut is Alt + Spacebar (which perfectly mirrors the Mac’s Command + Spacebar physical hand placement).
Press Alt + Spacebar right now.
A beautiful, minimalist search bar will instantly appear hovering in the dead center of your screen. There is no Start menu, no Bing web search results, and no advertising. It is just a cursor waiting for your command.
1. Lightning-Fast App Launching
Type word and press Enter. Microsoft Word will launch instantly. The search is significantly faster than the standard Windows Start Menu because it is not simultaneously trying to search the internet.
2. Instant Calculations
You no longer need to open the Calculator app. Just press Alt + Spacebar, type 450 * 12, and the answer (5,400) will appear instantly beneath the search bar. You can press Enter to copy that answer directly to your clipboard.
3. Quick Unit Conversions
Need to know how many centimeters are in 5 inches? Press Alt + Spacebar, type 5 inches in cm, and the answer (12.7) appears instantly.
4. Targeted File Searching
If you want to ensure PowerToys only searches for files (and ignores apps or calculations), you can use a trigger character. Press Alt + Spacebar, type a question mark (?) followed by your search term (e.g., ? Q3 Budget). PowerToys will instantly scan your hard drive for that exact file name.
Conclusion
The standard Windows 11 Start Menu is designed for casual users; it tries to do too many things at once. By downloading Microsoft PowerToys and adopting the Alt + Spacebar habit with PowerToys Run, you bring the speed, minimalism, and laser-focus of macOS Spotlight directly to your Windows PC.
