How to Fix Bluetooth Not Working or Missing in Windows 11

Bluetooth connectivity issues in Windows 11 are common but usually easy to resolve. Whether your Bluetooth toggle is completely missing from the Action Center or devices simply refuse to pair, the problem often stems from outdated drivers, corrupted services, or minor software glitches.

Why Is Bluetooth Missing in Windows 11?

Before troubleshooting, it helps to understand why the Bluetooth icon might disappear. Common causes include a disabled Bluetooth support service, a recent Windows update conflicting with drivers, or even a physical hardware issue if you use an external Bluetooth dongle.

1. Run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter

The quickest way to fix Bluetooth in Windows 11 is using the built-in troubleshooter, which automatically detects and resolves basic driver and service issues.

  1. Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Bluetooth in the list and click the Run button next to it.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. If the troubleshooter detects an issue, it will apply a fix automatically.

2. Restart the Bluetooth Support Service

If the background service managing Bluetooth crashes, the feature will stop working entirely. Restarting it usually restores functionality immediately.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services Manager.
  3. Scroll down and locate the Bluetooth Support Service.
  4. Right-click on it and select Restart. (If the service is stopped, click Start).
  5. To prevent this from happening again, double-click the service, change the Startup type to Automatic, and click Apply.

3. Reinstall Bluetooth Drivers via Device Manager

Corrupted or outdated drivers are the most frequent cause of missing Bluetooth options. Reinstalling them forces Windows to fetch a fresh, working copy.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Bluetooth category. (If you don’t see it, click View > Show hidden devices).
  3. Right-click your primary Bluetooth adapter (often named Intel Wireless Bluetooth, Realtek, or Generic Bluetooth Adapter) and select Uninstall device.
  4. Do not check the box that says “Attempt to remove the driver for this device” unless a standard reinstall fails. Click Uninstall.
  5. Restart your PC. Windows 11 will automatically reinstall the missing driver during boot.

4. Perform a Hard Power Drain

If you are using a laptop and the Bluetooth adapter has completely vanished from the Device Manager, residual static charge on the motherboard might be interfering with the hardware.

  • Turn off your laptop and unplug the charger.
  • Disconnect all USB devices and peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Plug the charger back in, turn on the laptop, and check if Bluetooth has returned.

Conclusion

Most Bluetooth issues in Windows 11 can be resolved by restarting the Bluetooth Support Service or reinstalling the drivers via Device Manager. If the problem persists after trying all these steps, verify that your computer’s BIOS is up to date, or consider purchasing an inexpensive USB Bluetooth dongle if your internal hardware has failed.
