Windows 11 comes pre-installed with the Xbox Game Bar, an overlay designed to help gamers record their screens, chat with friends, and monitor system performance. However, if you use your PC strictly for work, programming, or running heavy Adobe software, the Game Bar is essentially bloatware running in the background. Accidentally pressing Windows Key + G will summon a massive, distracting overlay over your work. Fortunately, you can disable it entirely.
How to Turn Off the Game Bar
You can disable the overlay trigger directly from the main Settings app.
- Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I on your keyboard.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Gaming.
- In the main window, click on Xbox Game Bar.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller. (Even if you do not own a controller, this is the master switch for the feature).
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
With this setting disabled, the Game Bar will no longer launch when you press the shortcut keys or connect a controller. This prevents accidental interruptions and slightly reduces the number of background processes running on your machine.
