How to Automatically Empty the Recycle Bin in Windows 11

The Recycle Bin in Windows 11 acts as a safety net, allowing you to recover files you may have accidentally deleted. However, because it securely holds onto this deleted data, it can quietly consume gigabytes of valuable hard drive space over time. If you constantly forget to right-click and empty the Recycle Bin manually, your computer can run out of storage without warning.

Fortunately, Windows 11 includes a built-in automated maintenance tool called Storage Sense. In this guide, we will show you how to configure Storage Sense to automatically empty your Recycle Bin on a schedule.

How to Enable Storage Sense

Before you can automate the Recycle Bin cleanup, you need to ensure the Storage Sense feature is activated on your PC.

1. Open the Windows 11 Start menu and click on the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
3. In the right-hand pane, scroll down and click on Storage.
4. Look for the Storage management section. Find the toggle switch next to Storage Sense and turn it On.

Configuring the Recycle Bin Schedule

Now that Storage Sense is running, you need to tell it exactly how long files are allowed to sit in the Recycle Bin before they are permanently deleted.

1. Still in the Storage Settings window, click directly on the text Storage Sense (or the small arrow next to the toggle switch) to open its advanced configuration menu.
2. Ensure the checkbox for “Keep Windows running smoothly by automatically cleaning up temporary system and app files” is checked.
3. Under the Configure cleanup schedules header, locate the dropdown menu titled: Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:
4. Click the dropdown menu and select your preferred timeframe. Your options are:
   • Never (disables automatic emptying)
   • 1 day
   • 14 days
   • 30 days (Recommended)
   • 60 days

We highly recommend setting this to 30 days. This gives you a full month to realize you made a mistake and recover a deleted file, while still ensuring your hard drive is regularly cleaned of old junk.

Run Storage Sense Immediately

Once you have configured your schedule, you don’t need to wait 30 days to see the results. You can force Storage Sense to run a cleanup operation right now based on the new rules you just established.

Scroll to the very bottom of the Storage Sense settings page and click the Run Storage Sense now button. A small loading icon will appear, and Windows 11 will sweep your drive, permanently removing any files in the Recycle Bin that exceed your configured time limit.
