How to Hide the Task View Button on the Windows 11 Taskbar

Windows 11 features a centered taskbar designed for simplicity, but Microsoft still includes several default icons pinned next to the Start button that many users never touch. One of the most prominent is the “Task View” button—an icon consisting of two overlapping squares that allows you to see all your open windows and manage virtual desktops.

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts (like Windows Key + Tab or Alt + Tab) to switch between applications, or if you simply never use the virtual desktop feature, the Task View icon is just wasting valuable space on your screen.

Fortunately, you can easily remove the Task View button and reclaim that space for the apps you actually use.

How to Remove the Task View Button

Hiding the Task View icon only takes a few seconds via the Windows Settings app.

  1. Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Windows 11 taskbar.
  2. From the small context menu that appears, click on Taskbar settings. (Alternatively, you can open the Settings app, click on Personalization in the left sidebar, and then select Taskbar).
  3. The Settings window will open directly to the Taskbar menu. At the very top, look for the section labeled Taskbar items.
  4. Locate the item named Task view.
  5. Click the toggle switch next to Task view to turn it Off.

The moment you flip the switch, the Task View icon will instantly disappear from your taskbar.

How to Access Task View Without the Button

Hiding the icon does not disable the Task View feature itself; it simply removes the shortcut from your screen. You can still access all of your open windows and virtual desktops instantly at any time using standard Windows gestures and shortcuts.

  • Keyboard Shortcut: Press the Windows Key + Tab simultaneously. This is the exact same action as clicking the Task View button.
  • Touchpad Gesture: If you are using a laptop with a precision touchpad, simply swipe upwards with three fingers to open the Task View interface. Swiping down with three fingers will return you to your desktop.

If you ever decide you want the button back on your screen, simply return to the Taskbar settings menu and flip the toggle switch back to the On position.
