How to Hide Files and Folders in Windows 11

Whether you share a computer with family members or frequently present your screen during Zoom meetings, there are likely some files or folders you’d rather keep private. Windows 11 includes a built-in feature that allows you to instantly render any file or folder invisible to casual observers without needing third-party encryption software.

While this isn’t a substitute for true password protection (anyone who knows how to enable hidden files can still find them), it is perfect for keeping personal documents out of plain sight.

How to Hide a File or Folder

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the item you want to hide.
  2. Right-click on the file or folder.
  3. Select Properties from the bottom of the context menu.
  4. At the bottom of the “General” tab, look for the “Attributes” section.
  5. Check the box next to Hidden.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you selected a folder, Windows will ask if you want to apply this change to “this folder only” or “this folder, subfolders and files.” Choose the latter to ensure everything inside disappears as well. The icon will instantly vanish from File Explorer.

How to View Your Hidden Files Again

When you need to access those files, you must temporarily tell Windows to reveal them.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click on the View button in the top toolbar.
  3. Hover your mouse over Show at the bottom of the dropdown menu.
  4. Click on Hidden items.

Your hidden files and folders will reappear, but their icons will look slightly transparent or “ghosted” to remind you that they possess the hidden attribute. You can now open them normally.

To hide them again once you are finished, simply repeat the steps above and uncheck “Hidden items.” To permanently unhide an item, right-click it, go to Properties, and uncheck the “Hidden” attribute box.
