Typing speed and spelling accuracy on mobile devices benefit immensely from predictive text engines that anticipate the next word before you finish pressing keys. On desktop and laptop computers, however, users typically type manually without inline word predictions. Windows 11 includes Text Suggestions for Hardware Keyboards, an accessibility and productivity feature that brings smartphone-style predictive word bubbles and autocorrect directly to physical laptop and desktop mechanical keyboards.
How Hardware Keyboard Text Suggestions Operate
When typing across any text field in Windows 11—including Notepad, web browsers, Microsoft Office, or Slack—the predictive engine provides real-time assistance:
- Floating Prediction Bubbles: As you type the initial letters of a word, a floating horizontal bubble displaying up to three intelligent word completions appears above your cursor.
- Keyboard Selection: Select suggested words instantly using the up arrow key and number keys (or cursor clicks), drastically reducing repetitive keystrokes for lengthy terminology.
- Automatic Spell Correction: Corrects common typographical errors and transpositions automatically as you press the spacebar.
- Multilingual Support: Predicts words seamlessly across multiple installed input languages without requiring manual keyboard layout switching.
Enabling Hardware Keyboard Text Suggestions in Windows 11
To turn on predictive typing for your physical keyboard:
- Open the Settings app on your Windows 11 PC (press
Windows + I). - From the left navigation panel, click Time & language.
- Click Typing in the right-hand options pane.
- Locate the option labelled Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
- Toggle the switch to the On position.
- To activate automatic spelling corrections on typos, also toggle Autocorrect misspelled words to On.
- If you write in multiple languages, toggle Multilingual text suggestions to On. Windows will evaluate active dictionaries simultaneously based on the language you are currently typing.
Using Text Predictions During Everyday Typing
Once enabled, using the feature across your daily workflow is natural:
- Open any application with a text field (such as Word, Notepad, or your web browser).
- Begin typing a word (e.g. typing
consi). - A subtle menu floats above your cursor presenting three candidate predictions: 1: consider, 2: consistent, 3: consideration.
- To accept a suggestion:
- Press the Up Arrow key to highlight the suggestions, then press Enter.
- Alternatively, press the number key corresponding to the word (e.g. press
1). - Or simply click the desired word with your mouse pointer.
- Windows inserts the completed word followed by a space, allowing you to continue typing without breaking rhythm.
Adjusting Typing Insights and Privacy
Windows 11 tracks local typing efficiency to illustrate time saved through automated predictions:
- Typing Insights: In Settings > Time & language > Typing > Typing insights, review metrics showing total keystrokes saved, completed words, and autocorrects applied.
- Local Processing: Keystroke prediction runs locally using device language models; personal text input is not transmitted to cloud servers for predictive rendering.
- Temporary Disabling: If coding in an IDE where custom autocomplete already operates, return to Typing settings to disable suggestions so floating bubbles do not conflict with code IntelliSense.
