The Controller Interruption
Windows 11 includes deep integration with the Xbox gaming ecosystem. One of the core features of this integration is the Xbox Game Bar, an overlay designed to let you record gameplay, chat with friends, and monitor PC performance. By default, Windows constantly listens for the Xbox button on a connected controller (or the Windows Key + G shortcut). If you connect an Xbox controller to your PC to play a game on Steam or simply to use it as a media remote, Windows will often throw up an intrusive prompt asking, “Get an app to open this ‘ms-gamingoverlay’ link” or immediately blast the Game Bar overlay across your entire screen, interrupting your workflow or gameplay.
Deactivating the Overlay Triggers
To ensure your controller button presses are routed exclusively to your active game and to stop Windows 11 from automatically launching the Game Bar overlay, you must disable the feature within the gaming settings.
Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Gaming. In the main right-hand panel, click on Game Bar (in some recent Windows 11 builds, this may be listed under “Xbox Game Bar”). You will see a primary toggle switch labelled Allow your controller to open Game Bar (or “Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller”). Click this toggle to turn it Off. For a more complete block, you can also search for “Installed apps,” locate “Xbox Game Bar,” click the three dots, select “Advanced options,” and change “Background apps permissions” to Never. The overlay will no longer appear when you press the guide button.
