How to Disable the Windows Spotlight Desktop Backgrounds in Windows 11

The Unwanted Imagery

Windows 11 includes a feature called “Windows Spotlight,” which automatically downloads beautiful, high-resolution photographs from Microsoft’s Bing servers and applies them as your desktop background, changing them daily. While many users enjoy the variety, it can be highly disruptive in professional environments. The images are completely randomized, meaning you might log in on Monday to a serene mountain landscape, and log in on Tuesday to a distracting, brightly coloured macro photograph of an insect that clashes horribly with your desktop icons and makes text difficult to read. Furthermore, the feature consumes a small amount of background bandwidth to constantly fetch new images.

Reclaiming Your Desktop Background

To stop Windows 11 from constantly changing your wallpaper and pulling unapproved images from the internet, you must disable the Windows Spotlight feature within the Personalisation settings and choose a static image.

Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings application. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Personalisation. In the main window, click on Background. At the very top of this page, you will see a dropdown menu labelled Personalise your background. If Windows Spotlight is currently active, this dropdown will say “Windows spotlight.” Click the dropdown menu and change it to either Picture (to select a single static photograph) or Solid colour (for a clean, distraction-free workspace). Once you make this selection, the background will immediately change to your chosen static option. Microsoft will stop downloading images in the background, and your desktop will remain exactly as you configured it.
