If you play PC games, you have almost certainly encountered the dreaded Sticky Keys warning. When you rapidly press the Shift key five times in a row—a common action in many action and strategy games—Windows 11 suddenly pauses the game, plays a loud warning chime, and throws a pop-up window onto the center of your screen asking if you want to turn on Sticky Keys.
Sticky Keys is a vital accessibility feature designed to help users who cannot hold down multiple keys simultaneously (like Ctrl + Alt + Delete). However, if you do not need this feature, the aggressive 5-press shortcut is nothing but a severe annoyance.
How to Disable the Keyboard Shortcut
You can permanently disable the shortcut without disabling the actual Sticky Keys accessibility feature.
- Open the Windows 11 Settings app (press
Windows Key + I). - In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Accessibility.
- Scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
- Look for the Sticky keys option at the top of the menu. Do not just toggle the master switch to Off. Click directly on the text “Sticky keys” (or the small arrow next to the toggle) to expand the advanced options menu.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled “Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys” (the subtext explains it triggers when you press the Shift key 5 times).
- Toggle this specific switch to the Off position.
That is it. You can now close the Settings app.
You can aggressively mash the Shift key fifty times in a row while playing a demanding PC game, and Windows 11 will remain completely silent, allowing you to play uninterrupted.
