How to Disable Settings Synchronization in Windows 11

The Unwanted Clone

If you use a Microsoft Account to log into Windows 11, the operating system aggressively attempts to synchronize your environment across every PC you own. By default, Windows will upload your desktop wallpaper, your theme colors, your saved passwords, and your language preferences to the cloud. When you log into a brand-new laptop, it will automatically download these files and clone the exact look and feel of your desktop computer. If you prefer each of your computers to have a distinct, unique setup, or if you simply refuse to allow Microsoft to store your system preferences on their cloud servers, you must disable the synchronization engine.

How to Turn Off Settings Sync

You can permanently sever the connection to the cloud backup server via the Account settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accounts.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Windows backup.
  4. Look for the section labeled “Remember my preferences.”
  5. Click the master toggle switch next to “Remember my preferences” to flip it to the Off position.

Independent Machines

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background synchronization process. Your current wallpaper, passwords, and accessibility settings will remain safely locked to your local hard drive. They will never again be uploaded to Microsoft’s servers, ensuring that any new computer you purchase will start as a completely blank slate, totally independent of your existing machines.
