The Acoustic Boot Vector
In a nostalgic nod to its legacy operating systems, Microsoft re-introduced the classic boot-up chime in Windows 11. By default, every time you turn on your computer or restart the system, it emits a loud, synthetic melody just before the lock screen appears. While charming for some, this unavoidable acoustic alert is highly disruptive if you frequently need to power on a laptop in a quiet office, a lecture theatre, or a library.
How to Disable the Startup Sound
You can instruct Windows 11 to boot in complete silence by toggling a specific setting buried within the legacy sound control panel.
1. Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Themes.
4. Look for the Sounds option (which usually displays the name of your current sound scheme, such as “Windows Default”) and click it.
5. A small, legacy dialogue box titled Sound will appear.
6. Look at the very bottom of this dialogue box. Locate the checkbox labelled Play Windows Startup sound.
7. Click the checkbox to remove the tick mark.
8. Click Apply, then click OK to close the window.
The next time you shut down and restart your PC, it will reach the login screen without emitting any audio whatsoever.
