The Privacy Leak
When you open File Explorer in Windows 11, the operating system defaults to a landing page called “Quick Access” (or simply “Home”). By default, the bottom half of this screen is dedicated to a massive list labeled “Recent.” This section displays the exact names and locations of the last twenty files you opened, regardless of where they are hidden on your hard drive. If you use a shared family computer or frequently screen-share your desktop during professional work meetings, this feature is a massive privacy liability. The moment you open your file manager, everyone watching can instantly see the titles of your private tax documents, confidential contracts, or personal photos. You must wipe the history.
How to Hide Recent Files in File Explorer
You can permanently strip the recent history panel from the interface via the Folder Options.
- Open any standard folder on your computer to launch File Explorer.
- Click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the top menu bar.
- Click on Options at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
- In the Folder Options window that appears, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look for the section at the bottom labeled Privacy.
- Uncheck the box labeled “Show recently used files.”
- Optional but recommended: Click the Clear button next to “Clear File Explorer history” to instantly wipe the current cache.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
A Blank Slate
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background tracking engine responsible for logging your file access history. The “Recent” section will instantly vanish from your File Explorer landing page. You can now safely open your file manager during a presentation, completely confident that your viewing history will remain entirely private.
