The Numpad Hijack
Windows 11 includes an accessibility feature known as “Mouse Keys.” Designed for users who cannot operate a physical mouse, this feature allows you to move the on-screen cursor pixel-by-pixel using the numerical keypad (Numpad) on the right side of your keyboard. However, if this feature is accidentally enabled, your Numpad instantly stops typing numbers. Pressing “8” will simply nudge your mouse cursor upward, and pressing “5” will execute a left-click. If you are an accountant or a data entry professional and your Numpad suddenly feels completely broken, you must disable the Mouse Keys override.
How to Turn Off Mouse Keys
You can permanently restore your Numpad to its default numerical state via the Accessibility settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility.
- Scroll down the main window to the “Interaction” section and click on Mouse.
- Under the “Use your keyboard to control your mouse” heading, locate the toggle switch labeled Mouse keys.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
Data Entry Restored
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever the internal hardware mapping that routed Numpad inputs to the cursor driver. If you open Excel or a calculator application, you can immediately begin rapidly typing numbers on the right side of your keyboard. The keys will act exclusively as numerical inputs, ensuring your high-speed data entry workflow is fully restored.
